Why I Like Lana Del Rey.

I’ll be the first to admit that as soon as an album leaks, I am going to do everything in my power to cop it.  With that said, when Lana Del Rey officially releases her album “Born to Die,” on January 30th (that happened to leak today), I will buy it to support my new favorite artist although I already have it in my possession.  People always get upset over albums leaking, but, at the end of the day, people will buy good music.  Even Drake would agree.

I remember watching “Video Games” back in September and being in shock of Lana Del Rey’s rare talent.  I probably have seen that video over 100 times in the past 5 months.  It’s nice, in this day and age, when auto-tune and lyrically lacking top 40 songs rule the radios, to hear an artist as exquisite and raw as Lana Del Rey.  Lana Del Rey could easily have made an upbeat pop album that sold millions of copies, but she decided to stick to her roots of soulful, heartfelt and sometimes even heartbreaking songs.  Her music accomplishes what very few artists are able to accomplish - that is having the listener relate to the music on more than a surface level.  Songs like “Summertime Sadness” and “Blue Jeans” remind us of what it’s like to be hurt by someone you once loved.  There is also a large sense of nostalgia in Del Rey’s music with every song bringing up memories from our past, some of which we weren’t even aware of.

I understand that Lana Del Rey doesn’t have appeal to everyone, especially with the controversy surrounding her.  Everything from her lips to her persona have been questioned for their validity, but in reality, those things don’t matter.  What we have with Lana Del Rey is a beautiful, entrancing, and fresh artist.  Those artists are few and far between nowadays.

With all of this said, I’d like to point out that I am the type of person that gets upset when artists that I have been listening to for a long time are discovered (see Bon Iver being nominated for a Grammy in the “Best New Artist” category when he’s been around for years).  Nevertheless, I want nothing more than for Lana Del Rey’s name and music be known worldwide.  She is quite the talent that deserves to be in the limelight.
